{"id":147,"date":"2012-08-04T06:41:16","date_gmt":"2012-08-04T13:41:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/?p=147"},"modified":"2012-08-04T06:41:16","modified_gmt":"2012-08-04T13:41:16","slug":"kol-nidre-at-carnegie-hall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/?p=147","title":{"rendered":"Kol Nidre at Carnegie Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fcbkbttn_buttons_block\" id=\"fcbkbttn_left\"><div class=\"fcbkbttn_button\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/randols\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/facebook-button-plugin\/images\/standard-facebook-ico.png\" alt=\"Fb-Button\" \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><div class=\"fcbkbttn_like \"><fb:like href=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/?p=147\" action=\"like\" colorscheme=\"light\" layout=\"button_count\"  size=\"small\"><\/fb:like><\/div><div class=\"fb-share-button  \" data-href=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/?p=147\" data-type=\"button_count\" data-size=\"small\"><\/div><\/div><p>This has been an amazing year for the Schoenberg\u00a0<em>Kol Nidre<\/em>, a work that is hardly ever performed. \u00a0In March, Ricardo Muti (see photo below) and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with Cantor Alberto Mizrachi gave the first performance by a major US orchestra. \u00a0Zubin Mehta followed with the first Salzburg Festival performance in July with Thomas Hampson and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. \u00a0Now Mehta et al will perform the work again in New York this October at Carnegie Hall. \u00a0The press release is below.<\/p>\n<p>I like this work. \u00a0We play a recording of it every year on the evening of Yom Kippur. \u00a0A number of years ago, I discovered a letter my grandfather had written to Cantor David Putterman of the Park Avenue Synagogue in New York, suggesting that the piece could be reduced for string quartet or even organ. \u00a0So I asked my uncle to have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schoenbergmusic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Belmont Music Publishers<\/a> commission Leonard Stein to make a reduction for organ. \u00a0Leonard had made the original piano score when he was my grandfather&#8217;s assistant in 1938. \u00a0We tried to get synagogues to sponsor the commission, but only Cantor Lester Siegel of Temple Emanu-El in Birmingham, Alabama was brave enough to take part.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the IPO press release about the Carnegie Hall concert:<\/p>\n<p>After the enthusiastic and heartfelt reception the Israel Philharmonic received at the 2012 Salzburg Festival in July (and at the urging of devoted friends and fans of the IPO), the Orchestra has opted to bring Arnold Schoenberg&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Kol Nidre<\/em>\u00a0and Israeli composer\u00a0<strong>Noam Sheriff<\/strong>&#8216;s\u00a0<em>Mechaye Hametim<\/em>\u00a0(Revival of the Dead)\u2014two works performed in Salzburg\u2014to New York City for the\u00a0<strong>Carnegie Hall gala on October 25<\/strong>\u00a0along with Grammy Award-winning baritone\u00a0<strong>Thomas Hampson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>The Collegiate Chorale.<\/strong>\u00a0The Salzburg performance of these works on July 24 prompted The <em>New York Times<\/em>\u00a0to state, &#8220;Abetted by Mr. Hampson&#8217;s tour de force, in which he also served as narrator in the Schoenberg and spoke and sang in the Sheriff, the evening&#8217;s performances were everywhere excellent&#8230;The concert was greeted warmly, even clamorously&#8230;&#8221; The concert at Carnegie Hall also features Yuja Wang performing Mendelssohn&#8217;s Piano Concerto No. 1 in G minor.
