No, not the water drought, although the recent rainstorms\u00a0means that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/2017\/01\/26\/new-report-california-drought-is-over-in-roughly-half-the-state-feds-say\/\">only 50% of the State is still suffering<\/a>. \u00a0Not since the <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2001\/oct\/21\/entertainment\/ca-59684\">S<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2001\/oct\/21\/entertainment\/ca-59684\">choenberg Prism<\/a> during the 2001-2002 season has the Los Angeles Philharmonic performed a work by Arnold Schoenberg on a\u00a0regular\u00a0subscription concert. \u00a0I blogged about this <a href=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/?p=43\">five years ago<\/a>, and again in 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/?p=457\">when a performance of the Schoenberg Violin Concerto was cancelled due to illness of the violinist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But now it is really over. \u00a0Last night, Gustavo Dudamel conducted the LA Philharmonic in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KmjWm4zt9qs\"><em>Begleitungsmusik zu einer Lichtspielszene, Op. 34<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rZlB2tRyvQw\">Piano Concerto, Op. 42<\/a><\/em>. \u00a0Emanuel Ax was the soloist. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L2xCB9RzUB8\">Ax loves the concerto<\/a> and has performed it many times over the years,<a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/2001\/oct\/08\/entertainment\/ca-54650\"> including back in 2001 during the Schoenberg Prism<\/a>. \u00a0Ax <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Schoenberg-Piano-Concerto-Liszt-Concertos\/dp\/B003O3UA46\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1485562763&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=schoenberg+ax\">recorded the concerto<\/a> with former LA Phil conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen, but not with LA Phil, but the Philharmonia Orchestra. \u00a0This week&#8217;s performance may even available on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-N367Tp-IUM\"> livestream<\/a>. \u00a0Mark Swed gave it a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/arts\/la-et-cm-la-phil-review-20170127-story.html\">nice review in the LA Times<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/imgres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1087\" src=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/imgres.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/imgres.jpg 372w, https:\/\/schoenblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/imgres-300x109.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 372px) 100vw, 372px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My parents said that the pre-concert talk by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.russellsteinberg.com\/\">Russell Steinberg<\/a> was fabulous, devoted entirely to the Schoenberg. \u00a0Apparently he had the entire audience humming the opening lines of the concerto.<\/p>\n<p>One thing no one has mentioned, I think, is the private &#8220;program&#8221; of the concerto, which was composed in Los Angeles in 1942.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Life was so easy<br \/>\nSuddenly hatred broke out<br \/>\nA grave situation was created<br \/>\nBut life goes on<\/p>\n<p>My grandfather was 68 years old when he wrote the piano concerto. \u00a0The entire world was in flames. \u00a0He had a young wife and three very young children (ages 10, 5 and 2). \u00a0The contrast between the serene, sunny lifestyle in his new home, and the conflagration raging in his old one, must have been stark. \u00a0You can hear that contrast in the concerto. \u00a0It&#8217;s a timely reminder that we gotten through tough times before.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The drought is over.
